Greenland Pictures
Greenland is mostly smothered by one of the largest ice sheets in the world. This sheet creates glaciers all over the island and those generate icebergs.
Icebergs are a way of life in the fjords of Greenland. There are no roads around the island and travel is by water.
Arctic Char are in every river on the island and this is one of the best places in the world to catch them. They were not small char and average about two pounds.
There are no trails in Greenland and hiking requires knowing a little about the area. There are maps that show all of the relief. This valley was the landmark for the river I was fishing. It was about a three hour hike to the river.
The Ilua River was beautiful even though it was low from little rain. The low water didn't make much difference to the char that were in every deep pool.
Arctic Char are circumpolar in distribution and Greenland has the heaviest concentration of char that I have come across. The fishing in South Greenland was excellent.
The moss on the bottom of the Ilua River created a wonderful color. The water was extremely clear and the fish were easily spooked.
The char in Greenland fought well and often jumped. They were all decent and because of the low water conditions some of the pools did not give them much room to fight. That didn't matter to the fish. They still jumped and liked to wrap the line around rocks. I lost several good fish.
Much of the fishing was sight fishing. Quiet wading was required along with upstream casts. It was possible to target specific fish in some pools and that was a nice casting challenge.
South Greenland is beautiful.
